Mokou's eventual growth past her hatred of Kaguya as a rasion d'etre in CiLR is squandered if there's no room in an interpretation for lightheartedness or forgiveness. Ignoring the Inaba 4komas, you still have incidents like the typically stoic Mokou blabber about Kaguya like she's a bad roommate in IN, Kaguya casually inviting Mokou to tea through Reisen in ULiL, the two covering for each other in BAiJR, and so on. There's some interesting stuff going on in Mokou's mind with apologism for "loved" ones and scapegoating that I believe gets papered over if one takes her hatred at face value.Īdditionally, Mokou's relationship with Kaguya is often turned into something super dark and punitive when that's not very true in canon. In other words, I believe that Kaguya is completely to blame for the fact that I desire revenge. Since I think the pain that I taste today was that pain bestowed upon me by Kaguya, it's made it easier for me to keep going. It was painful spending all of my days in search of a way to spite her, but that just made the revenge I sought all the more valuable. However, it's true that nothing brings a sense of motivation the way a lust for revenge does. Looking back on it, I think spending that much time nursing my bitterness against others probably bent me. Finding a way to harrass Kaguya would have been enough to bring me some satisfaction. Of course, when I was young, I wouldn't have thought about mutual killings. Even Mokou herself partially admits that her rivalry is more of a force to keep her going than anything particularly reasoned in CiLR: The logical connection between "Kaguya rejected my father to whom I am an unwanted child" and "Kaguya is my rival who must be laid low, even if that means killing the innocent" is a seemingly shaky one, and I think that the connection is intentionally weak on ZUN's part.

It's too sensible in that many times Mokou is portrayed as having a legitimate reason to hate Kaguya when one doesn't really exist. I think Mokou's vengeful relationship with Kaguya is often made both too sensible and too serious in fan works. Despite being occasionally pessimistic, she's quite content with her "life" as a Hourai immortal. She's not one who's too enthusiastic about conversations however, there are times when she's open for small talk. She usually acts as a guide for those who end up lost in the forest and leaves as soon as she's done without saying a word. She chose to take refuge in the Bamboo Forest of the Lost in (near) solitude. Mokou's hatred for Kaguya seemed to die down a bit as time went on as shown in Inaba of the Moon and Inaba of the Earth. Since either one couldn't truly stay dead, they destroyed each other over and over again until they could no longer take the pain.

It was then Mokou started to hate Kaguya.Īfter gaining absolute immortality from the Hourai Elixir, the series of consecutive battle between herself and Kaguya began. Unfortunately, Mokou's father was one of the men who took upon these challenges, and he (as well as the rest of the family) was embarassed immensely. Living up to their name, the requests were never completed. In response, Kaguya had presented these men with her impossible requests.

Back when Kaguya was in exile on Earth, men across Gensokyo were captivated by her unearthly beauty. Mokou is shown to be quite antagonistic towards Kaguya, mainly because of their intertwined pasts. Technically speaking, she not even alive, nor is she dead. She doesn't have eternal life the concepts of life, death, time, and decay no longer apply to her. In contrast to other forms of immortality, she has immortality in the truest of sense, which is completely irreversible. She is one of the four Hourai immortals (the other three being Kaguya, Eirin, and Chang'e).Īs a Hourai immortal, Mokou has absolute immortality. Fujiwara no Mokou is a human who resides in the Bamboo Forest of the Lost.
